Library to implement a series of positive changes

Summary of Changes to the Campus Library Service from next semester

24/7

  • There will be full 24/7 operation throughout semesters from September 2012

Short Loan

  • Extended borrowing period – books will now be due back by midnight the following day (significantly extended from 11 am the next day)
  • Simplified fines on Short Loan items – not by the hour but from midnight £1 per day fine will apply, £2 if reserved by another borrower
  • It will be possible to take Short Loan items elsewhere in the Library without having to check the item out of Short Loan – this will be useful when the Short Loan area is full or students wish to use them in other quieter parts of the Library
  • It will be possible to reserve Short Loan items ONLINE from Sept 2012

Reserved Books

  • A new self-service area is being provided to enable 24/7 collection of reserved items (they can currently only be collected during staffed hours)
  • Reserved books will be covered by a wrapper and labelled with name and organised alphabetically

Noise Management

  • A TEXT service is now available for students to alert staff to excessive noise in study areas – staff will respond by roving the reported area and requesting quiet to be resumed

More Group Study Space*

  • As requested from recent student engagement survey –we are re-furbishing and increasing the number of group study spaces on the middle floor

Extended Refreshment Area*

  • The refreshment area will be extended and refurbished to include a comfortable lounge area

*as a result of these changes some resources are being relocated; Quick Reference will take a more prominent place on the first floor.

Self Service Fine Payments

  • From September it will be possible to pay fines in cash out of staffed hours using new fine payments units

ENCORE

  • We are developing a one-stop search facility which will consult the library catalogue and most of our online databases simultaneously, thus saving your time by avoiding having to type the same search into multiple resources to get a good result.
